Childhood Cancer Research Program

IBI Group designed the renovation of the existing laboratory in the Heritage Medical Research Building at the University of Calgary’s Foothills Campus. The newly designed facility challenges traditional approaches to laboratory design, providing a modern and highly functional open-concept space.

The Childhood Cancer Research Program (CCRP) is located on the third floor of the Heritage Medical Research Building at the University of Calgary’s Foothills Medical Campus. IBI Group designed the 11,100 sq. ft. space, equipped with perimeter offices for all Principal Investigators, an open primary laboratory with adjacent secondary laboratories, a conference room and kitchen/collaborarium.

A series of frameless sliding glass doors separate lab benches within the primary lab from write-up desks directly outside. This key design feature allows for seamless transitions and clear views across the different spaces. Vistas are created from exterior windows through to the heart of the primary lab, allowing for transparency and light to extend throughout the floor plate.

A linear continuity of views within the project is reflected in both the lighting design and furniture selection. A base palette of white, black and gray create a contemporary working environment while pockets of vibrant colour, seen in textiles and furniture, reflect the subject of childhood research.
